Pronouncement: Reproductive Rights Blocked by Columbia, MO Hospitals Defiles Hippocratic Oath

In order to ensure patients receive quality care, we ask two Columbia hospitals how they can deny admitting privileges to Planned Parenthood Columbia Health Center’s physicians and still claim to be honoring the Hippocratic Oath. Their refusal puts the reproductive health of Missouri citizens at risk, by placing severe burdens on patients seeking legal healthcare procedures.

While the surrounding hospitals may have declined comment to NPR on this article NPR: 1 Abortion Clinic Remains Open In Missouri, Following New State Requirements … We, being residents, who may at some point seek healthcare at their institutions deserve answers. Though these admitting privilege requirements are completely unnecessary and would not place a patient at risk, they serve simply to shutter the doors to reproductive choice.

“Hippocrates, the central historical figure in Greek medicine during the 5th century BCE, authored a group of medical treatises known collectively as the Hippocratic Corpus. It was Hippocrates who first attempted to separate the practice of medicine from religion and superstition. His Hippocratic Oath was remarkable in terms of the moral standards he sought to establish for the healing profession.”

Are these hospitals more inclined to serve our health needs using modern science and medicine or in pushing a religious agenda? We believe citizens of Columbia, Missouri deserve access to quality, science-based and secular-minded healthcare. We are deeply concerned about the ethics and merit of hospitals who don’t take our reproductive health needs seriously.

We call upon the scientists and physicians on staff at University Hospital and the University of Missouri to step forward. We ask them to publicly acknowledge: Ignoring the reproductive health needs of the University of Missouri student body is ultimately hazardous to their health.

We challenge the University of Missouri to take appropriate steps, and to recognize denying legal health care is damaging to the reputation and credibility of the academic institution itself.

We ask MIZZOU Alumni to step up. To make yourselves heard.

According to Google Maps:

University Hospital is 7 minutes away.

Boone Hospital is 6 minutes away.

We demand direct answers from these two hospitals closest to Planned Parenthood Columbia Health Center as to the specific reasoning used to deny any well-trained physician admitting privileges.

May science and reason always triumph over myth and superstition.

Ave Lilitu!
